Francisco Abreu Callado, born in 1834, was the founding patriarch of the grange that inherited his name and that, in the last quarter of XIXth century, was one of the more important of Alentejo. His son, Cosme de Campos Callado, only heir for death of his parents and brothers (and with these having established, in 1942, an old people’s home to support the aged and retired ones, not only of the farm house but also of the all parish of Benavila), created later, in 1948 and for public will, one of the most prestigious institutions of social support, not only of municipality of Avis, but of all the district of Portalegre : the Foundation Abreu Callado.
The Foundation was created with two essential socio-educative goals : 1- its retired workers, whom which gives retirement complements, medicine support and other social advantages ; 2- the training in agricultural and other techniques intended these worker’s chindren, in “old” School Jose Godinho de Abreu – nowadays Professional School Abreu Callado.
With headquarters in Benavila, parish of municipality of Avis, right in the heart of the North Alentejo, the Foundation Abreu Callado is settled in a manor house with typical rustic moth of this region and that exhibits the date of 1758 in its biggest chimney. Benavila lies in the banks of the Maranhão lagoon, an artificial lake of rare beauty, with an extension superior to 30km, that close to Benavila shows one of the most attractive landscapes of the lagoon, and that holds an infinity of protected terrestrial and aquatic fauna.
